On November 30, 2013, McKenzie founded the Patriotic Alliance political party and was elected as its first president. McKenzie and longtime friend Kenny Kunene have gained notoriety for utilizing open letters as a means of igniting controversy, provoking political discourse, and garnering attention.

 Months after the Economic Freedom Fighters were formed, Kunene abandoned the group and assisted in the founding of the Patriotic Alliance.

The Patriotic Alliance was co-founded by Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene, two people who went from being criminals to being significant figures in business and politics.
